Rujuta Diwekar on ghee: power food with energy & wellness benefits

Rujuta Diwekar on why you shouldn’t skip rice, ghee, and sugar We visited Rujuta Diwekar’s (38) Khar office — a simple-looking room with a wooden floor, comfy couches, and a beautiful painting of the body’s energy points or chakras. It’s neutral in approach yet welcoming, a lot like the owner of the office here. Celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan (she guided her to become ‘size zero’ for Tashan, 2008), Alia Bhatt, and Varun Dhawan have considered Diwekar a celebrity. She is one of the first Indian bloggers to be active behind the scenes. She started “Rujuta’s Gyan” (rujuta diwekar.blogspot.in) in 2008 and wrote about her observations on natural health and wellbeing, healthy dieting, and food. With bestsellers like Don’t Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight (2009), and Women and the Weight Loss Tamasha (2010) behind her, she has authored a best-seller book — Indian Superfoods. Much like her other works, this book, too, promotes the idea of eating foods you are familiar with but may consider unhealthy. Think rice, ghee, sugar and cashews. What’s the catch? You need to eat it fresh, locally sourced, and in the “versatility it is meant to be eaten in.” Also, you need to prcatice exercising and sleeping right, and the result is awesome — you can be in shape and in the best health. Back to basics The foundations of this philosophy were laid during Diwekar’s childhood when she would visit her grandparents’ farm in Sonave (a village in Palghar district, Maharashtra). “All my vacations would be spent there. My cousins and I would help grow and harvest the crops. That was our entertainment and a tool for learning,” she recalls. Diwekar started her practice in 1999 with a postgraduate degree in sports science and nutrition from SNDT College. Her first clients were fitness-conscious actors and industrialists. Diwekar is praised for the former: “The easiest people to work with are celebrities. They are the most disciplined.” Her experience at her grandparents’ farm made Diwekar realize the importance of sustainable living. “Today, we are told about a particular ingredient that’s supposed to be the ultimate thing to lose weight. Tomorrow, the same ingredient is touted as the biggest villain. How often can you change how you live?” she asks. Instead, Diwekar advocates that we follow our grandmothers’ wisdom and not be swayed by modern trends like stocking up on quinoa and kale — the two biggest trends internationally in recent times. “Quinoa doesn’t sit well in your stomach nor blend with anything. And until two years ago, we didn’t even know what kale was. Now, we have it in every form. We are copying the poor man’s food from a different continent. There is such diversity in the food of our own country — grains, legumes, pulses — but we are overlooking it.” So, how did the definition of nutrition become synonymous with filling your plate with unpalatable foods? When did we become a nation that rejects ghee but takes to olive oil? “The demarcation of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats was meant to help people make sensible decisions. But it has just left people confused. Nowadays, selling anything by terming it ‘trans-fat-free’ or ‘sugar-free’ is lucrative. The only people benefiting are those in the food and weight-loss industries,” she says. But telling people that the global ‘health’ foods fads they’ve bought into are unnecessary must be tricky. Diwekar, on the other hand, says people are relieved. “They are reminded of the time in school or college when they would eat everything and still be healthy.” The next round Diwekar started Beyond Weight Loss — a series of programs targeted at overall well-being — early this year, aiming for a holistic view of life. As part of it, she hosts a talk at her Khar office every month. The talk is live-streamed on social media as well. Past events have included a Dhrupad music concert and a financial talk on why women should invest. She recommends using clarified butter, for example, over other so-called healthy oils like olive oil, canola oils, etc. Why use ghee for wellness benefits? When ghee is loaded with fats, why should we use ghee for wellness benefits? Diwekar is also working on a book on child obesity. Another project that she is keen on is the Sonave Community Farming Project, where she takes Mumbaikars to her ancestral farm to grow their food. The idea is to raise awareness about the goodness of Indian food and ensure it doesn’t come back repackaged from the West. “We should not wait for the West to acknowledge it as something of value. A diet that is not culturally compliant is a diet that won’t last beyond two meals. Why is killing yourself at a gym and starving a better idea than giving food we grew up eating a chance?” How to use ghee for wellness benefits in food? Why grass-fed ghee is a better product than other types of ghee? Grass-fed ghee is often considered a better product than ghee from grain-fed or conventionally raised cows for several reasons: It’s important to note that the nutritional differences between grass-fed and grain-fed ghee can vary depending on factors like the cow’s diet, farming practices, and the specific brand or producer of the ghee. While grass-fed ghee may offer particular advantages, both types can be included as part of a balanced diet, and the choice ultimately depends on individual dietary preferences and priorities. However, it is important to go for grass-fed ghee only to enjoy the best ghee benefits in your favor.

5 Ways Low Carb Diet Helps You to Lose Weight

Low carb diets are standard in the weight loss spectrum. Many studies have shown they result in more weight loss than the standard low-fat diet plan. Going on a low carb diet has many health benefits, including the fact that they are highly effective at eliminating visceral fat, such as that in the belly, a most dangerous type of body fat.   There have been so many speculations, thoughts, and ideas on why low-carb diets are effective for weight loss. Hopefully, this article will bring some clarity. What Exactly Is a Low Carb Diet? A low carb diet is a system of eating where carbohydrates are drastically or significantly cut from the diet. In the strictest plans, like the Ketogenic diet, carb intake is limited to non-starchy vegetables and some dairy. When one’s diet contains fewer carbohydrates, the body no longer gets its energy from the glucose they produce and instead begins to burn fat for energy. Starch and sugar carbohydrates are substituted with healthy fats and a moderate protein intake. Sugar, pastries, pasta, bread, cereal, beans, or any other starches are no longer allowed. You should indulge in vegetables, fatty foods such as Ghee, butter, fatty fish, oils, and some dairy, along with eggs, steak, chicken, seafood, and other protein sources. How Does Low Carb Diet Aid Weight Loss? When people embark on a low-carb diet, their appetite significantly drops naturally, and they naturally feel satisfied with less food, resulting in weight loss as they naturally eat fewer calories without suffering and starvation. Are Low Carb Diets Safe? This is a frequently asked question common amongst people wanting to embark on a low-carb journey. The low-carb experience is not for everyone, though it is followed by thousands worldwide without any problems.   How does ghee fit into low carb diet plan? Ghee can fit into a low-carb diet plan quite well due to its low carbohydrate and high healthy fat content. Here’s how ghee can be incorporated into a low-carb diet: Despite its compatibility with low-carb diets, consuming ghee in moderation is important. Ghee is calorie-dense, and excessive calorie intake, even from healthy fats, can hinder weight loss on a low-carb plan. Be mindful of portion sizes and consider your overall calorie and fat intake when including ghee in your meals. Stay well and take care! What does ghee mean? 6 features of ghee that are health-friendly

What does ghee mean? From the culinary aspect, it is a dairy product. But what makes it unique from other dairy items? But about ghee, this small introduction is not adequate. At one go, we conceptualize Ghee as a wholesome dairy cooking fat that adds a beautiful taste to food. Melted ghee releases a unique nutty flavor, offering some awesome health benefits. Before we further explore what does ghee means, let’s look at what describes ghee from the content point. What does ghee mean: How ghee looks? Ghee is a liquid or semi-liquid butterfat free of lactose, casein, and moisture content. But unlike butter ghee clarified butter, regular butter is a safer cooking oil than regular butter, and it poses no risk of allergy for dairy-sensitive consumers even with severe lactose intolerance.  The smoke point of ghee is higher than regular butter, making ghee-clarified butter a safer cooking oil than traditional butter or browned butter. You can use it as a cooking oil and as raw as a healthy butter alternative.  Furthermore, butter contains milk protein, like lactose and casein, but ghee-clarified butter is free from milk solids; hence, it is identified as a safer dietary butterfat in your diet. Traditionally, ghee is prepared from dairy unsalted butter. Although a ghee manufacturer can source pure butterfat from salted and unsalted butter, the unsalted variety is mainly used for quality ghee production. Melted butter turns into a more simplified form in slow boiling. Hence, ghee is called clarified butter. What does ghee mean: Why grass fed? Grass-fed Ghee contains loads of healthy fat; out of it, you can find saturated fats. Cow ghee is widely popular worldwide, and the ghee diet has earned respect for its therapeutic effect. But if we close-view the ghee benefits, it is primarily due to its fat content, which contains long-chain fatty acid, MCT oil, and health-friendly short-chain fatty acids.  Cow ghee is prepared from regular butter made of cow milk, and grass-fed cow’s milk is used to prepare grass-fed cow milk. In the dairy market, grass-fed ghee is counted as one of the best quality ghee, but it has a definite reason.  What does ghee mean: Why grass-fed ghee is a preferred dairy? According to dairy research, cows fed on a grass diet offer more nutritious cow milk than grain-fed cows. As a result, grass-fed butter contains more nutrients than regular butter, making grass-fed ghee a better quality dairy cooking oil. For instance, grass-fed ghee contains 5 times more conjugated linoleic acid than non-grass-fed ghee of the same quantity. What does ghee mean: Ghee and butyrate Ghee in the diet means natural support for a healthy colon. The butyric acid content of ghee works as a natural colon cleanser and reduces the problem of constipation if added to the diet. If you are wondering “what does ghee mean”, you can count it as a natural detoxifier for the body that helps flush toxins out of the body naturally.  What does ghee mean: Ghee and vitamins Besides fat, grass-fed ghee contains a small number of fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K2. Cow ghee looks yellow because of the beta carotene found in the grass, which is the main diet of dairy cows. Butyrate, Omega 3, and 6, as well as conjugated linoleic acid or CLA, are some of the prime ingredients of ghee that offer different health benefits for ghee consumers.   Ghee is Versatile  As ghee and ghee quality are interrelated, what does ghee mean also includes the concern about ghee content, ghee nutrition, and the list of nutrients in this cooking oil.  The word Ghee hints at a unique versatility. You can use ghee for all types of cooking, like baking, sautéing, deep-frying, etc. Ghee is compatible with cooking veg and non-veg dishes, and dairy oil is an efficient taste enhancer.  What does ghee mean for food safety: Ghee is a better oil than vegetable oils Grass-fed ghee, in all ways, is different than vegetable ghee. Vegetable ghee is an herbal product with limited shelf friendliness, and it contains trans-fat and is not cooked from Milk. On the other hand, ghee is shelf-friendly, contains loads of saturated fat, and hardly contains trans fat. The versatility that cooking fat ghee can offer, vegetable oil cannot offer the same to its consumers.  Ghee is storage-friendly Ghee’s definition includes its storage-friendly character. You can store ghee in the kitchen without the support of refrigeration for up to 24 months from its date of manufacturing. Ghee is used as a wholesome cooking oil and can be used for different types of ghee recipes. Ghee cooking methods include high-temperature cooking as well as low-heat cooking.  Ghee is a safer cooking oil If we discuss elaborately what does ghee mean, ghee smoke point is one of the unique qualities of this dairy oil. Ghee offers a higher smoke point than other cooking oils like olive, coconut, sunflower, etc., making it safer in the cooking fat category. While ghee offers plenty of health benefits, there are some prerequisites too. You have to use ghee of the best quality. Also, quantity restriction is essential to enjoying all the unique ghee benefits.  Ghee in the diet benefits people of all ages; however, you should always use ghee in moderation. Ghee casein content: let’s explore more of it

Ghee casein-free: what’s the impact? Ghee casein is a significant dietary issue. Food-sensitive people should avoid having casein in their diet because it may cause allergies. These food-sensitive people need to stay alert to their milk or milk product consumption to avoid the risk of food allergy. What is Casein allergy?  Ghee, being a milk product, contains many health benefits that milk offers. Milk intolerants are mostly lactose intolerants as milk content in dairy triggers the food allergy. According to research, other than lactose and casein, milk protein also stands responsible for food allergies in some humans. It is called casein allergy. Therefore, we can safely conclude that the ghee casein combo is undesirable for people with casein intolerance. But what is milk casein? Does Yogurt have casein?  Is casein dairy allergy-trigger? Now it is vital to understand the ghee casein coincidence. Casein, the milk protein, remains in milk, especially mammal milk. It has been observed that up to four kinds of casein protein are found in a mammal’s milk; however, the quantity of this milk protein largely depends on some farming-related conditions. The common conditions that may decide the Casein in milk measure in mammals’ milk are: Therefore, the farming intricacies have to be considered when choosing ghee. According to research, grass-fed cow milk contains a lesser quantity of casein.  Does cheese have casein? Yes, it contains, which can be risky for casein intolerants to consume, so it is safer for them to know the foods that contain casein.  Hence, manufacturers prepare dairy like ghee from grass-fed cow milk; it is safely guessed that grass-fed cow milk may contain a lesser quantity of casein in food made from such milk. Many dairy products contain casein, but there is an exception too. Casein limited products are also available in the consumer market. As casein is the milk protein, it’s found mostly in dairy products with moderate-to-high protein content, such as: Dairy products containing less protein and more fat, such as butter and cream, usually contain very little casein. Clarified butter, or ghee, contains ideally no casein at all. Therefore, ghee casein relation is almost incoherent, as good quality ghee hardly contains casein milk protein. How does ghee get prepared? Ghee is manufactured by boiling ghee butter; in this boiling process, casein is eliminated from the buttery fat. The ghee butter becomes more clarified; it is called clarified butter. Ideally, clarified butter does not contain casein. But it is not guaranteed that all ghee products are casein-free. Want to be sure about the ghee casein factor? Go for organic grass-fed cow ghee, where you can ensure proper casein elimination. What is casein? But what makes casein in food a culinary villain? Is ghee whey protein-free? Let’s take a quick look at the allergy symptoms of casein. Symptoms and intensity may vary, so it is better to know about this protein first. Let’s see how casein is scientifically defined! “Caseins are well-defined as proteins that become viscous and precipitated from milk when the pH of milk is adjusted to pH 4.6 at 20°C. WP is the protein that remains soluble at pH 4.6 after the precipitation of caseins and includes β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg), α-lactalbumin (α-La), bovine serum albumin (BSA), immunoglobulin (Ig), and lactoferrin (Lf)”. (https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/food-science/casein) Casein protein is found in milk and many other dairy products. A casein allergy is observed when your body erroneously recognizes casein as a danger to the health system. Your body then triggers a reaction to fight it off. Ghee casein reaction is rarely found, but if found, it can be painful. Casein allergy is unlike lactose intolerance, which happens when the human body doesn’t make adequate of the enzyme lactase. Lactose intolerance will make you feel irritated after having dairy. However, a casein allergy, including ghee casein reaction, mostly causes: Casein causes internal inflammation, which is why it ignites several physical discomforts for people with food sensitivity. How to avoid casein in ghee? Ghee casein is not a desirable combo, so with easy effort, you can avoid casein in your daily dose of dairy. In the process of buying ghee, you can take three major precautions. Check if the ghee is made from grass-fed cow milk. Grass-fed cow milk contains a lesser quantity of casein in milk. Grass-fed cow ghee offers better benefits than ghee procured from grain-fed cow milk. Always use certified organic and grass-fed cow ghee. You will get to check the certification from the product label. Always check if the product is certified as a ghee casein-free product. Always avoid using homemade ghee as, in most cases, you do not know the origin of the cow milk and its quality, the cow’s diet, etc. All homemade cow ghee cannot be certified as a casein-free product and, therefore, cannot be used if you have a milk allergy or a food sensitivity. This discussion proves that ghee casein is an important point to count on, and it is safe to use completely casein-free cow ghee. However, all cow ghee sold in the market is not casein-free in reality; therefore, check the product label for authenticity. Ghee casein confusion? As casein is one of the triggers of food sensitivity for food-allergic people, you must avoid foods containing casein. Milk-made products like butter contain casein, but ghee-clarified butter is a casein-free product, although it is milk-made. Want to use risk-free casein-free cow ghee? You can try Milkio organic grass-fed ghee in your kitchen. Milkio ghee is produced from grass-fed cow milk. It is organically certified and is produced without synthetic flavor, color, preservatives, etc. It is completely free from lactose and ghee casein.
