Should your child’s diet include ghee?

Should your child’s diet include ghee?

Ghee has been an ancient staple in many diets around the world.

Grass-fed cow ghee is made from heating butter until the milk solids and proteins are removed, leaving ghee with pure butter fat. A child’s diet, particularly under 5, needs to be monitored closely as this is an important developmental stage for vital organs.

Ghee is an excellent source of fats, including saturated fats, which are indeed required for growth. The fats in ghee include triglycerides, free fatty acids, sterol & sterol esters, carbonyls, carotenoids, phospholipids and essential fatty acids such as omega 3 & 9.

Fats such as the ones from grass-fed cow ghee are essential for many important bodily functions such as absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E & K), providing organ insulation, aiding cell structure and providing energy for growth. Grass fed cow ghee contains beneficial CLAs, amino acids and fatty acids 3- 6.

Fats aid the growth of many organs in a child’s development. Fats are particularly essential in supporting the growth of the brain. The brain is the fattiest organ in our bodies, made up of at least 60% fat, including saturated fats. Fatty acids aid the growth of neurons in the brain.

Fatty acids in the brain

Fatty acids in the brain have a rapid turn over and need to be replaced regularly, and therefore a regular dietary intake of fats are essential at all stages of life, but in particular during development.

Fats are still needed

So even from as early as development in the womb, there needs to be a constant fatty acid supply to aid foetal growth. At later stages in life, fats are still needed to maintain membranes and myelin sheaths surrounding nerve cells.

Grass fed Ghee vs. butter: Which is better for Keto?

Grass fed Ghee vs. butter: Which is better for Keto?

There has been a lot of debate on this topic, particularly within members of the Ketogenic (Keto) diet community. We will tackle this controversial issue through a step by step logical narration.

Ghee and butter can be compared due to their general similarities; both being dairy products, containing good amounts of fats, and some similar nutrients.

Now before going onto explain this issue, we need to understand what a Keto diet is exactly.

What is a Keto diet?

A ketogenic diet is a popular and proven successful dieting scheme worldwide, where dieters are recommended to reduce their carbohydrate consumption and instead focus on their protein and fat intake.

The Keto diet gained popularity due to its ability to lose body fat quickly. People suffering from obesity or with excess unwanted body fat, may see great benefits from trying out a Keto diet, provided there is no history of heart disease or hypertension.

This diet is based off the theory of ketosis; where the human body doesn’t use the Citric Acid Cycle due to a lack of glucose from carbohydrates. So essentially the Keto diet is a high-fat, high-protein and low-carb diet, the reduction of carbohydrates induces the state of ketosis.

So since fats are a major point of interest in this diet, this brings the question of whether ghee or butter is better?

Why grass fed ghee is preferred for the Keto diet:

Grass fed cow ghee is known to be called the “better butter”. There are many reasons why:

  • Ghee contains more fat per gram than butter: one TBSP of ghee contains 14g fat compared to 1 12g in butter.
  • Ghee offers a higher smoke point than butter: 485°F (252°C) versus 350°F (177°C) for butter.
  • Cow ghee has a better shelf life: Grass fed is more shelf stable and can be preserved without refrigeration, saving you fridge space.
  • Grass fed Ghee is suitable for those that are lactose intolerant: Ghee is clarified butter, so all the milk solids and proteins are filtered out. Many individuals with a lactose allergy can consume ghee fine but not butter.
  • Grass fed organic Ghee contains vitamins, butyrates, and CLAs which are gut friendly and good for your health.
  • Ghee contains Medium Chain Triglycerides ¹ (MCTs) and this is excellent in providing high energy levels and helping with cognitive functioning.

If you are wanting to consume the right kinds of fats and provide yourself with energy on a keto diet, cow ghee is a better choice than butter.

How to use grass fed cow ghee in Keto diet

Ghee is very versatile and adapts well to most cuisines. Keto dieters have reported that grass fed cow ghee has a more flavorsome taste over regular butter itself.

  • Cooking: Replace ghee 1:1 in place of the cooking oils and butters you use now. Use ghee for stir-frying, sautéing, barbequing, roasting etc.
  • Spices: Ghee is known to make spices, ie. Garlic, more flavoursome. Fry some garlic in ghee before adding veges or meat, and witness the intense aromas given off.
  • Hot drinks: Add a spoonful of ghee into your morning coffee, tea or hot chocolate for a fast energy boost.

Overall, grass fed cow ghee if consumed in moderation, can work as a feel-good and everyday staple in your diet.  Replace the current fats in your diet with ghee’s good fats, and watch your keto diet work fantastically.

Organic grass fed ghee: do I need to refrigerate this dairy delicacy?

Organic grass fed ghee: do I need to refrigerate this dairy delicacy?

Organic grass fed ghee is a shelf stable product and quality manufactured cow ghee can be stored for 12-18 months after its production.

However, usually grass fed cow ghee does not need the support of refrigeration if you can maintain few directions and storage conditions.

You can store cow ghee for long without keeping it in refrigerator with these restrictions.

  • Store grass fed cow ghee in an air tight jar, preferably in a glass jar. You have to keep the jar away from direct sunlight and with the lid on. The dry and dark shelf of your kitchen cupboard is the best place to store cow ghee for long term.
  • You must use a dry and clean spoon to take out ghee out of the jar. Or else you may place some small quantity of cow ghee in a small container. This is the best way to maintain the quality and texture of the bottled cow ghee.
  • Do not use moist spoon for taking out ghee. It will be risky for the quality maintenance. Contact with unwanted moisture may spoil the entire bottle/jar of cow ghee.
  • If you have purchased cow ghee in a bigger quantity, it is always safe to use ghee as per daily needs from a small container. Instead of plastic container air tight glass container or steel made container is a better choice.
  • During summer, organic grass fed ghee mostly remains in semi liquid state. It is rightly called kitchen staple. Both veterans and non-vegetarians can use ghee in moderation.

Sometimes cow ghee looks runny and unstable

Cow ghee contains lots of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) and these MCTs offer different melting points. Difference in climate than its manufacturing climate may cause these MCTs melting.

The mix of melted MCTs and crystallized parts of the fats are the reason for the unpredictable contour of ghee. It may seem runny and inconsistent.

This problem seems natural in summer season. In wintry season ghee’s normal density remains completely unhampered.

But if the organic grass fed ghee seems to be too unusually unstable, and there is no trace of creamy or grainy texture in it, you may try these easy methods to make it consistent.

  • Pour the entire cow ghee in a steel pan with heavier bottom. Heat the ghee and let it melt completely. Once it is semi cooled, put it back in the jar.
  • You can place the ghee jar in semi-hot water and allow the jar sit on the warm water bed for some time. You will find shortly the ghee is back to a regular texture.
  • You may keep the grass fed cow ghee jar is refrigerator for overnight, and it will be back in its regular consistency.

Refrigeration is done here for maintaining the consistency of the cow ghee in jar. But you don’t need to preserve ghee in refrigerator.

How to preserve an opened jar of cow ghee?

Once you have opened a jar of organic grass fed ghee, you must learn the preservation clues. Otherwise, there is a fair chance that due to wrong preservation, the quality of cow ghee will get compromised. The common recommendations are:

  • You must use an air tight container for storing ghee.
  • Glass container is a better option for long storage.
  • Keep the jar away from direct sunlight or external heat.
  • If possible, prefer a color glass jar for storing grass fed cow ghee in normal temperature.
  • It is important to use dry and clean spoon for taking out of ghee from the jar.
  • Store the jar in a dry and clean place.

Besides, you must check the recommendation of the manufacturer for ideal storage of the organic grass fed ghee you have bought.  If the manufacturer recommends refrigeration of the ghee jar once it opened, you may opt for refrigeration of the ghee in the jar.

Otherwise cow ghee is shelf stable and does not need preservation support of refrigerator.
